College at a Glance
Enrollment and Graduation
In its first year as part of the Pac-12, the University of Utah had 35,402 students enrolled—27,562 undergraduate students and 7,840 graduate students. And true to form, the College of Social and Behavioral Science has once again been ranked the largest college at the University with 4,095 declared undergraduate students and around 660 graduate students for the year.
This year’s graduation numbers are equally impressive, with the U’s number of graduating students coming in at 7,659. The college accounted for 20% of that number with 1,400 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students.
CSBS also held three of the top five majors with psychology and economics ranked at the No. 1 and 2 spots and human development and family studies coming in at No. 4. Overall, the college held four of the top ten majors with sociology coming in at No. 10.
Faculty Research
The numbers from Dean Rudd’s message bear repeating. He writes, “In comparison to 2007 numbers, the college increased funded research 500% (from $422,854 to $3.6 million last year. That growth has been sustained for a second consecutive year. This year the college grew almost another $1 million to $4.3 million in annual funded research – a tenfold increase to 2007.”
The number of faculty engaged in funded research has also expanded dramatically. In 2009, 42 faculty members submitted funding proposals. In 2011 that number doubled to 85 – a number that represents 66% of tenure-line faculty in the college.
