Six U students receive Fulbright awards for 2019-20
Fulbright recipients address critical global challenges in all areas, while building relationships, knowledge and leadership in support of the long-term interests of the United States. Six University of Utah students have been selected as finalists for the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Four of them were in the College of Social and Behavioral Science, and an additional student as an Alternate!
Luciana Salmi, BA in Psychology, received a Fulbright research award to Italy. Her project aspires to analyze the effects of stress and social support on a group of mothers with a high body mass index categorized as overweight or obese.
Chris Rigby, MS in International Affairs and Global Enterprise, will serve as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant award to Kenya. He intends to implement programs in the classroom to help the students to effectively communicate in English.
Brock Mays, MS in International Affairs and Global Enterprise, received a Fulbright Research award to Lithuania. Brock would like to examine the effects of Russian misinformation and disinformation on Lithuanian society and Russia’s campaign has negatively impacted trust in the national government.
Danielle McLaughlin, BA, in Political Science and Middle East Studies, will serve as an English Teaching Assistant award to Malaysia. Along with teaching English, she also would teach a boxing class to young women and to create an American literature club.
Tina Soma, Ph.D. student in Psychology, is an Alternate for a Fulbright research award to Norway. She proposes to conduct a study of emotions during therapy. If awarded, she will collaborate with Norwegian researchers who fuse research with therapy practice to better understand how therapists and clients regulate their emotions during therapy.
