David and Melinda Simmons Remember Wayne Owens
The Hinckley Institute and the college received a $67,000 gift from David and Melinda
Simmons to honor the late Wayne Owens. The gift is the first of three to fulfill a
$200,000 pledge to the Wayne Owens Endowment for Middle East Politics. Owens, a close
friend and mentor to Simmons, died in 2002 having served several terms as a U.S. Congressman
and then advocating for Middle East peace prior to his death.
The Hinckley Institute brings in a Middle East scholar and offers forums focused on
Middle East issues each year with funds from the Owens Endowment. Simmons' gift will
significantly strengthen the endowment and allow the Hinckley more flexibility in
offering Middle East programming.
Earl and Elies Skidmore Endowment Funds Six Honor Roll Scholarships
The CSBS Honor Roll Scholarship program is assisting more students in 2013-2014 thanks
largely to the Earl and Elies Skidmore Scholarship Endowment. The endowment was created
with a $540,000 gift several years ago from the Skidmores. Earl's wish was that endowment
interest be reinvested until his death at which time the college could begin awarding
scholarships. While Earl's passing in 2012 was a significant loss the endowment is
now active and will assist several CSBS students annually in perpetuity.
CSBS to Turn Attention to Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships In 2013-2014
Cynthia Berg, CSBS interim dean, will lead an initiative to raise more scholarship
and fellowship support for CSBS graduate students. The lion's share of over $160,000
for CSBS student scholarships goes to undergraduates. Dean Berg and the development
staff will be appealing to Alumni, corporations and foundations through one-on-one
meetings, a direct e-mail campaign and the University phonathon to meet this initiative.
