Researcher's work could help wildfire managers determine when to give evacuation orders
Dapeng Li (Ph.D. Geography '16), assistant professor of geography for South Dakota State University, is helping emergency managers to better determine when to call for evacuations due to a wildfire.
The data-based modeling system used in Li’s studies is helping emergency managers make evacuation determinations more swiftly thanks to its ability to accurately predict the speed and direction of a wildfire’s movements. This information is then interfaced with a traffic simulator which assists in estimating how long it will take affected residents in an area to safely evacuate. Read full article.
