Revenge of the Red States
In Utah, "COVID has reshaped the politics'' of the still very conservative state, says political science professor Phillip Singer. The Democratic nominee for governor, Chris Peterson, has been very vocal about the importance of wearing masks, while the GOP nominee, Spencer Cox, touts his role on the state coronavirus task force and beat primary opponents who were more skeptical of such rules. (Cox, however, has not called for mandatory masks.)
"COVID has sucked up all the oxygen in the room," Singer says.
