All-American despair
For the past two decades, a suicide epidemic fueled by guns, poverty and isolation
has swept across the West, with middle-aged men dying in record numbers. Dr. Craig
Bryan emphasized, “There’s been an increase in the ‘every-man-for-himself mentality.
There doesn’t seem to be as strong a sense of ‘We’re all in this together.’ It’s much
more ‘Hey, don’t infringe upon me. You’re on your own, and let me do my own thing.’ ”
