Faculty Feature - What the political crisis in Venezuela could mean for Utah
A recent article from KUER highlighted the growing Venezuelan migrant population in
Utah, which saw significant growth following the political crisis in Venezuela. Nicolás
Maduro’s controversial re-election has led to widespread protests and arrests, forcing
many Venezuelans to flee the country. Professor Claudio Holzner of the Department of Political Science, explained that while many migrants initially
travel to neighboring countries like Colombia or Brazil, some make their way to the
United States, with Utah becoming an attractive destination due to its strong economy
and lower cost of living compared to cities like New York or Miami.
Mayra Molina, director of the Venezuelan Alliance of Utah, emphasized the state's lack of resources to accommodate a large influx of new immigrants. Her organization provides essential support, including housing and legal assistance, but the growing number of arrivals is straining available resources. Both Molina and Holzner recognize the challenges Venezuelan migrants face as they navigate the asylum process and try to establish themselves in a new country.
