2026 Dean Welcome Back Message

Headshot of Becky UtzDear Students,

Welcome back to the College of Social and Behavioral Science! I hope you've had time to rest and reconnect, because this semester is full of promise.

Our college exists to help us understand ourselves and each other—how people think, why societies function the way they do, what shapes behavior, and how we can build a more just and connected world. That work matters now more than ever, and you are the ones carrying it forward.

This semester, you'll dig into new research, engage in lively classrooms, and build the analytical and empathetic skills that define your field. Our faculty are excited to guide you, challenge your assumptions, and celebrate your growth every step of the way.

To our returning students, welcome back to a community that values your voice and your insight. To our new students, welcome to a place where understanding people is the whole point, and where your perspective will make us all sharper.

As always, our college motto guides everything we do: Be the Solution. Every class you take, every question you ask, and every conversation you have here is a chance to put that motto into practice—to take the understanding you're building and turn it toward real challenges facing real people. That's the mindset I hope you carry with you all semester long.

I invite each of you to come say hi on August 27, when we host an informal "donuts with the dean" open house.  I look forward to meeting you.

Here's to a semester of insight, connection, and meaningful discovery.
