We’re proud to congratulate John Deeds - a University of Utah alum with dual bachelor’s degrees in political science and psychology, and a JD from the S.J. Quinney College of Law - on his recent appointment by Governor Spencer Cox as Commissioner of the Utah State Tax Commission.
Deeds brings over a decade of experience in tax law, having served in both public and private roles, including with the Utah Attorney General’s Office Tax and Revenue division. His deep understanding of tax policy and commitment to public service make him exceptionally well-suited for this important role overseeing Utah’s tax laws and administration.
As a student, Deeds was actively involved with the Hinckley Institute, where he interned with the Utah Legislature and gained firsthand experience in state policymaking.
He credits the University of Utah with laying the foundation for his career in law and public policy, where the mentorship and opportunities he received helped cultivate a lifelong interest in government and service.
Deeds’ appointment - recently featured in Utah News Dispatch - is a powerful example of how a degree in the social sciences prepares students to lead, serve, and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
