U sociologist Kim Korinek's Vietnam Health and Aging Study (VHAS) featured in Science
Research led by University of Utah sociologist Kim Korinek, featured in Science, offers a rare and powerful look at the long-term health consequences of war on civilians.
As director of the Vietnam Health and Aging Study (VHAS), Korinek has partnered with
Vietnamese scholars to document the physical and emotional tolls endured by those
who lived through the Vietnam War.
The team’s findings show that the age at which people experienced wartime trauma,
as well as their gender and roles during the conflict, are deeply tied to health outcomes
later in life - including cardiovascular issues, chronic stress, and other health
issues. Korinek emphasizes the importance of centering Vietnamese voices in the study
of a war too often told through a U.S. lens.
