The University of Utah General Commencement is the campus-wide opening ceremony, kicking off many events across campus and serving as a collective celebration of the University community and the collective success/accomplishments of the graduating class. It will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at 6:30pm in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. We recommend that you attend, as this year's ceremony will feature some exciting changes and additions that should be memorable.

PhD and Master Convocation

Students graduating with their PhD or Masters will have their degrees conferred during the college graduate convocation ceremony in Kingsbury Hall.

Date: Thursday, May 1, 2014
Time: 10:00am
Location: Kingsbury Hall
Reception: Libby Gardner Hall @ 11:30am

Guest Seating: Guest seating at Kingsbury Hall is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests should be seated by 9:45 am. The academic processional will begin promptly at 10:00 am. Ushers will be available to assist with guest seating. Some seating will be reserved for graduation candidates, convocation staff and guests in wheelchairs and their companions.

Special Seating/Accommodations: Students or guests with disabilities (including individuals in wheelchairs and those who have limited mobility) attending convocation can request special accommodations by contacting Aleta Tew at 801-581-5966 or aleta.tew@csbs.utah.edu. The College requests that guests give reasonable prior notice by April 26, 2013. We ask that guests arrive early and use the handicapped entrance located on the East side of Kingsbury Hall.
Note: Requests made the day of convocation cannot be accommodated; prior notice must be given.

Photographs: A professional photographer, Gammell Photography, has been authorized to photograph all graduation candidates. A representative from Gammell Photography will contact graduates after the ceremony with information on how to purchase the photographs. You are not obligated to purchase these photographs. Family and friends may take pictures as long as they do not disrupt the ceremony. No one is allowed at the front of stage.

Parking: Campus parking lots may be used at no charge during Convocation and Commencement ceremonies. Families are encouraged to drop off guests who cannot walk long distances at Kingsbury Hall before parking their cars. Graduates and guests are encouraged to park at Rice-Eccles Stadium and ride the free campus shuttle which runs every 15 minutes. The walk from Rice Eccles Stadium to Kingsbury Hall takes about 10 minutes. Campus parking lots may be also be used.

Information for the Graduates:
Candidates will carry hoods over their right arms and will be hooded when the degree is awarded.

Cap and Gown Orders: Candidates are encouraged to order regalia during the University Campus Store Grad Fair (March 27 - March 29) when special pricing is available. Late-order regalia is available the week of convocation (April 22- May 2) at regular price.

Reader Cards: A reader card will be given to you when you arrive at convocation. Fill out both sides of the card and bring it with you to the reader table. One side is identifying information for the photographer. The other side is to provide your information to the faculty announcing student names as they cross the stage.

Arrival Time: All graduates should plan to arrive in cap and gown by 9:30am at Kingsbury Hall. Tassels should be on the right side. Staff members from the College of Social and Behavioral Science will be available to assist you throughout the convocation ceremony.

Personal Belongings: Please leave purses, bags, cameras, and personal items with your guests. You may not be returning to the same seat after walking across the stage for the presentation of graduates and awarding of degrees.

Diplomas: Diplomas are mailed to graduates from the Office of the Registrar within three months of graduation. If your address, phone number, and/or email address change, update your information immediately in the Campus Information System (CIS). The Registrar will use the most recent address listed in CIS when mailing your diploma.

Reception: Graduates, family and friends are invited to a celebratory reception immediately following the convocation ceremony. This will be held in Libby Gardner Hall which is the building directly west of Kingsbury Hall. Please plan to attend. Food will be served.



Undergraduate Convocation

Students graduating with their Baccalaureate degrees will have their degrees conferred during the college undergraduate convocation ceremony in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

Date: Friday, May 2, 2014
Time: 9:00am
Location: Huntsman Center

All graduates are required to wear the appropriate cap and gown during the ceremony. Graduates should plan to arrive at the Jon M. Huntsman Center at 8:30am. The procession begins promptly at 9:00am

All candidates should go directly to their seats as designated below. Students will not march in a procession.

  • Anthropology – Section B, enter by Portal 2-3, Rows 1-5
  • Economics – Section K, enter by Portal 10-11, Rows 12-29
  • Environmental & Sustainability Studies – Section K, enter by Portal 10-11, Rows 1-5
  • Ethnic Studies - Section C, enter by Portal 3-4, Rows 1-2
  • Family and Consumer Studies – Section B, enter by Portal 2-3, Rows 13-30
  • Gender Studies – Section C, enter by Portal 3 – 4, Rows 1-2
  • Geography – Section K, enter by Portal 10-11, Rows 6-11
  • Health Society & Policy – Section B, enter by Portal 2-3, Rows 6-12
  • Political Science – Section L, enter by Portal 11-12, Rows 13-25

*Students graduating with honors, student ambassadors, Return to the U students, Undergraduate Research Scholars and Service Learning Scholars will be asked to line up at the west tunnel entrance to the Huntsman Center and are invited to sit on the floor. You will receive further notification before convocation.

Information for the Graduates:

Photographs: A commercial photographer, Gammell Photography, will be present to photograph all candidates. You will be asked to fill out name cards for the photographer, but you are under no obligation to purchase pictures. Family and friends may take additional photographs as desired.

Cap and Gown Orders: Student graduates can pay for and pick up graduation regalia at the University Bookstore.

Huntsman Center circle before parking their cars. The closest parking to the Jon M. Huntsman Center is directly south in the LDS Institute lot. Guests may also park in other lots.

Ceremony should be 1 hour and 45 minutes.
