The University of Utah General Commencement is the campus-wide opening ceremony, kicking off many events across campus and serving as a collective celebration of the University community and the collective success/accomplishments of the graduating class. It will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 6:30 P.M. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. We recommend that you attend, as this year's ceremony will feature some exciting changes and additions that should be memorable.

PhD and Master's Convocation

PhD and Master's Convocation: Students graduating with their PhD or Master's will have their degrees conferred during the college graduate convocation ceremony in Kingsbury Hall.

Date: Thursday, May 5, 2016 
Time: 10:00 A.M.
Location: Kingsbury Hall
Reception: Presidents Circle Lawn @ 11:30 A.M.

Ph. D. Candidates: Upon arrival please enter at the West side of Kingsbury Hall and proceed to the Founders Room in the basement for the processional line-up. This will be a designated staging area for the faculty, please report to this area and follow the directions of the staff on site. PhD Candidates should be dressed in their cap and gown and have their hood draped over their right arm as they are enter the hall for the procession. Hooding of PhD Candidates will take place on stage. Processional will consist of one line entering the seating area. Once on stage and at your seat, remain standing until all the faculty and official party have entered the seating area, Dean Berg will ask all to stand for the National Anthem. Dean Berg will invite everyone to take his or her seat and the speaking presentation will begin.

Master's Candidates: Enter Kingsbury Hall through the main south doors and seat yourself on the floor in the designated area (first 20 rows). Please arrive with your cap, gown and hood on. Instructions are HERE. You will be guided by staff members where to walk once the conferring of degrees has started.

Guest Seating: Guest seating at Kingsbury Hall is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests should be seated by 9:45 am. The academic processional will begin promptly at 10:00 am. Ushers will be available to assist with guest seating. Some seating will be reserved for graduation candidates, convocation staff and guests in wheelchairs and their companions. The Recessional will follow in reverse order; however, the Graduates and guests will remain seated until the official party has left the seating area.

Special Seating/Accommodations: Students or guests with disabilities (including individuals in wheelchairs and those who have limited mobility) attending convocation can request special accommodations by contacting Aleta Tew at 801-581-5966 or aleta.tew@csbs.utah.edu. The College requests that guests give reasonable prior notice by April 30, 2016. We ask that guests arrive early and use the handicapped entrance located on the East side of Kingsbury Hall.

*Note: Requests made the day of convocation cannot be accommodated; prior notice must be given.

Photographs: A professional photographer has been authorized to photograph all graduation candidates. A representative from Island Photography will contact graduates after the ceremony with information on how to purchase the photographs. You are not obligated to purchase these photographs. Family and friends may take pictures as long as they do not disrupt the ceremony. No one is allowed at the front of stage.

Parking: Campus parking lots may be used at no charge during Convocation and Commencement ceremonies. Families are encouraged to drop off guests who cannot walk long distances at Kingsbury Hall before parking their cars. Graduates and guests are encouraged to park at Rice-Eccles Stadium and ride the free campus shuttle which runs every 15 minutes. The walk from Rice Eccles Stadium to Kingsbury Hall takes about 10 minutes. Campus parking lots may be also be used.

Reception: Graduates, family and friends are invited to a celebratory lunch immediately following the convocation ceremony. This will be held on the lawn across from Kingsbury hall.

Diplomas: Diplomas are mailed to graduates from the Office of the Registrar within three months of graduation. If your address, phone number, and/or email address change, update your information immediately in the Campus Information System (CIS). The Registrar will use the most recent address listed in CIS when mailing your diploma.

Undergraduate Convocation

Students graduating with their Baccalaureate degrees will have their degrees conferred during the college undergraduate convocation ceremony in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

Location: Huntsman Center

All graduates are required to wear the appropriate cap and gown during the ceremony. The procession begins promptly at 2:00 P.M.

All candidates should go directly to their seats as designated below. Students will not march in a procession.

*Students who will be seated on the floor are asked to line up at the west tunnel entrance to the Huntsman Center. There will be a designated staging area for your group in the tunnel, please report to this area and follow the directions of the staff on site. They will instruct you on what to do for the procession of the ceremony. Please have your cap and gown on when you enter the tunnel area.

Information for the Graduates: Reader Cards: A reader card will be given to you when you arrive at convocation. Fill out both sides of the card and bring it with you to the reader table. One side is identifying information for the photographer. The other side is to provide your information to the faculty announcing student names as they cross the stage.

Photographs: A commercial photographer, Island Photography, will be present to photograph all candidates. You will be asked to fill out name cards for the photographer, but you are under no obligation to purchase pictures. Family and friends may take additional photographs as desired.

Personal Belongings: Please leave purses, bags, cameras, and personal items with your guests. You will not be returning to the same seat after walking across the stage for the presentation of graduates and awarding of degrees.

Diplomas: Diplomas are mailed to graduates from the Office of the Registrar within three months of graduation. Parking: Campus parking lots may be used at no charge during Convocation. Families are encouraged to drop off elderly guests and those who cannot walk long distances in the Jon M. Huntsman Center circle before parking their cars. The closest parking to the Jon M. Huntsman Center is directly south in the LDS Institute lot. Guests may also park in other lots. Ceremony should be 1 hour and 45 minutes.
